  1. Authors LIVE! Stuart Isacoff, author of When the World Stopped to Listen: Van Cliburn's Cold War Triumph, and Its Aftermath

May 9, 2017, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Authors LIVE! is co-sponsored by The Friends of the Highland Park Library, Highland Park United Methodist Church and The Friends of the SMU Libraries.

From the author of The Natural History of the Piano, comes the story of the 1958 international piano competition in Moscow, where, at the height of Cold War tensions, an American musician showed the potential of art to change the world.

April of 1958--the Iron Curtain was at its heaviest, and the outcome of the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition seemed preordained. Nonetheless, an unlikely favorite emerged: Van Cliburn, a polite, lanky Texan whose passionate virtuosity captured the Russian spirit.

Autographed books will be available for purchase before and after the program. The author will personalize his book after the program.

The 7:00 p.m. Authors LIVE! programs are free and open to the public.

The 6:00 p.m. Author Reception including a signed copy of the author’s book is $30 and must be reserved at least 2 days in advance by calling HPUMC at 214-523-2240 or online More Details
